This has been a full week for T&T Clark. We've seen The Audience of Matthew by Cedric E.W Vine published:
New into the LNTS series, this work systematically analyses the local-audience thesis in relation to the Gospel of Matthew. Vine posits four main critiques. The first suggests the assumptions which underpin the text-focused process of identifying the Gospel's audience lack clarity. Second, local audience readings necessarily exclude plot-related developments and are selective in their treatment of characterisation. Third, Vine argues that many in an audience of the Gospel would have understood Matthew within the context of their understanding of Mark, or other early traditions. Fourth, Vine suggests that early Christian audiences were largely heterogeneous across multiple categories. As such, the aural reception of the Gospel would have resulted in a variety of impacts. His conclusion? There was no characterisable audience for the Gospel.
On the Theology side of things, we have published Robin Gill's Textbook of Christian Ethics 4th Edition. Now with a snazzy orange cover, this editon includes new material focusing on current debates on new topics, including global Christianity, global economics, euthanasia and global justice and the environment. Here's the front cover:
Happy reading, and best wishes for the weekend from T&T Clark!
