T&T Clark would like to offer our warm congratulations to Professor Werner Jeanrond, who has been appointed Master of St Benet’s Hall, a Permanent Private Hall of the University of Oxford run by Ampleforth Abbey.
WernerJeanrond previously occupied the position of Professor of Divinity at the University of Glasgow and becomes the first layman ever to run the Hall. In 2008 he became the first lay person to hold the Chair of Divinity, the senior chair of University of Glasgow; prior to that he was a professor of systematic theology at Sweden’s University of Lund, the first Catholic in Sweden to hold such a post.
The Blessing of Professor Werner Jeanrond was held in the church of the Holy Spirit at Blackfriars on 7th October.
Werner Jeanrond is author of A Theology of Love, published by T&T Clark in 2010. In it he explores the different dimensions of Christian love, with particular reference to the variety of approaches to love in the Bible, Augustine, medieval theology, Protestant agape-theology, Catholic approaches to desire, and contemporary philosophy and sociology. Professor Jeanrond argues that all expressions of love wrestle with the challenge of otherness, and discusses the rich and often problematic heritage of expressions of personal, communal and religious love to develop a critical and constructive theology of Christian love for our time.
