‘Jesus, Criteria, and the Demise of Authenticity’ Conference, Dayton OH

The schedule has now been confirmed for the upcoming conference centred around the recently published Jesus, Criteria, and the Demise of Authenticity edited by Chris Keith and Anthony Le Donne.

Taking place on 4^th – 5^th October 2012, this conference will critique the assumptions and methods of the so called ‘Third Quest of the Historical Jesus’. It will bring together world-class authors and speakers to discuss ‘authenticity’ and ‘criteria’ as these concepts have been traditionally understood and employed in New Testament studies.

The conference will be held at Southpark United Methodist Church, 140 Stonemill Road, Dayton, OH 45409.

Dictionary of the Bible - book competition!

After all the positive response we received from our Schürer competition, we thought we’d do another one!

We are considering a new edition of the Dictionary of the Bible. The original, by James Hastings, was published by T&T Clark in 1909, with a revised edition by E.C Grant and H.H Rowley released in 1963.

We’re interested in knowing how much people use dictionaries of the Bible, whether you think a revision on our 1963 publication is necessary, and what form that revision may take. It would also be great to hear your ideas on who you think might be good to take on the job.

Again, there are prizes up for grabs:

First prize: two monographs of choice from either LHBOTS, LNTS or LSTS.

Second prize: one monograph from either LHBOTS, LNTS or LSTS.

Third prize: a paperback.

Review: Ascension Theology

Douglas Farrow’s Ascension Theology has received an enthusiastic review from Justin A. Mihoc of Durham University. In the first of this year’s Sacra Scripta, Journal of the Centre for Biblical Studies, Mihoc writes that:

‘Farrow’s book represents a wonderful example of contemporary theological reflection based on the “traditional” Patristic interpretation of the very enigmatical episode of Christ’s exaltation. In a fresh and restructured way, the author presented the mystery of Christ’s Ascension and his session ad dexteram dei, alongside its theological significance for the Christians of today. This insightful monograph calls us to the eucharistic life of the Church, it calls for a new and optimistic faith in the redemptive power of the ascended Christ. The conclusions it reaches, although they may appear controversial and peculiar, spring from a Patristic reading of Scriptural truths, and from the longstanding tradition of the universal Church that confesses through her Creeds the faith in Christ’s Ascension and session at the right hand of the Father. We can only applaud Prof Douglas Farrow for his very valuable and inspired book, and hope that it reaches the wide audience intended by its author.’
