There is a two page article by the TLS' religion editor, Rupert Shortt, on Tracey Rowland's Benedict XIV - A Guide for the Perplexed. The book does not appear to be exactly to his taste, but the article is well worth a read!

According to Christian doctrine we are all "fallen" self-possessed "sinners".
Which is to say that we are always totally God-less or actively dis-associating from The Divine Reality on a moment to moment basis.
This is also the case with the Pope.
Therefore what useful life-changing Wisdom could the Pope possibly communicate? Even in the face of his seemingly sophisticated theological writings.
