To start off the week, I'm pleased to offer a very strong endorsement from John Day for Paul M. Joyce's Ezekiel: a Commentary.
The review appears in the Society For Old Testament Study Booklist 2008
This important commentary has been many years in the making. Originally it was intended to appear in the New Century Bible commentary series, but that series has now, regrettably, come to an end. Commentaries not appearing in a series sometimes get a bit overlooked, but it is earnestly hoped that this will not be the case with this volume, as it represents a major contribution to the field. The commentary proper is preceded by an ample introduction that discusses in turn 'Time and Place', 'Unity, Authorship and Redaction', 'Theological Themes', 'Ezekiel and Earlier Traditions', 'Structure', 'Text and Versions', 'Place in the Canon', 'After Ezekiel: Ezekiel in Tradition', and 'Outline Analysis of Ezekiel'. The commentary itself is unusually set out throughout in paragraphs, which adds to its readability. Inevitably, in a work embracing a myriad exegetical decisions, it is sometimes possible to take a different position, but Joyce’s conclusions are always very carefully considered and based on the most thorough research. Joyce’s command of Ezekiel scholarship is impressive (there are over one thousand items in the bibliography!) and this commentary is fully to be recommended to anyone seeking an up-to-date and balanced commentary on this prophetic book.
