It gives me great pleasure that my first post of 2008 is to draw your attention to the paperback edition of one of our best selling titles from the LNTS series.
Paul N. Anderson's The Fourth Gospel and the Quest for Jesus questions whether the Gospel of John can contribute anything of substance to the quest for the historical Jesus. Whilst this may sound like fairly well-trodden Johannine ground, the key difference here is the strength of argument with which Anderson challenges the assumption that the Fourth Gospel's difference from the synoptics render it historically unreliable. Anderson offers innovative ways of reading the gospel texts, and stylishly displays a new theory of Johannine-Synoptic relations.
The rave reviews speak for themselves:
'This extremely interesting and instructive work creates a middle path between the harmonization and distotrion of historicity in John. It deserves attention! Anderson lays open the perplexities in the Johannine text and then proposes workable solutions for the furthering of Johannine exegesis. I warmly recommend this book.'
Martin Hengel, Emeritus Professor of New Testament and Early Judaism, University of Tubingen, Germany
'In this masterful book Paul Anderson traces the history of the Gospel of John and reassesses what role John might play in learning more about the historical Jesus'
James M. Robinson, Professor Emeritus, Claremont Graduate School of Theology, USA
The book is available now in the UK and from 12th February in the States.
