We certainly seem to be releasing a number of volumes in various series, lately. Don't we? Well, here is the last book of the Illuminating Luke trilogy, Illuminating Luke: The Passion and Resurrection Narratives in Italian Renaissance and Baroque Painting. Written by Heidi J. Hornik and Mikeal C. Parsons at Baylor University, this illustrated book addresses the various representations of the final chapter of the life of Jesus in the Lukan gospel.
In this third and final volume of the Illuminating Luke series, Professors Hornik and Parsons focus their careful analysis and insightful reflections upon Renaissance and Baroque representations of Christ’s passion and resurrection. Completing the series’ chronological progression of the Biblical narrative from Jesus’ birth and public ministry according to the gospel of Luke’s unique canonical arrangement, the authors present four scenes found only in Luke in the paintings of the great Italian masters Fra Angelico, Vasari, Stradano, and Caravaggio. Each painting’s representation of the biblical narratives is scrutinized in terms of style, history, and iconography in order to understand better its historical context and visual exegesis.
This series provides an invaluable contribution to the fields of both art history and biblical studies in that it enriches the appreciation of the history of the biblical narratives’ interpretations; identifies attributes unique to Luke’s gospel that enrich an understanding of a particular painting’s iconography; reveals the prevalence of minor and/or apocryphal scenes of Luke and the surprising absence of its popular narratives; and addresses and resolves the subsequent confusion between biblical and non-biblical subjects by scholars and students alike. This survey of Renaissance and Baroque art of the Bible is an important resource for both artists and academics.
The third volume will be available in the UK in January.
